Fun with names [Jun. 19th, 2007|07:47 pm]
A birth community for homebirthers etc.

Everyone is having such great conversations on natural birth topics, etc, this is fun to read.

I thought I would throw out a small book review for the book that is my current obsession and I've been dragging it around with me since I knew I was pregnant. Alas, it has nothing to do with natural childbirth.

The book is The Baby Name Wizard by Laura Wattenburg. I've got three other books that tell me the origins and meanings of baby names but Baby Name Wizard is different.  The author discusses the popularity of each name. And she sorts names into categories or styles. For each name she suggests "brother and sister names", (basically if you like this name, you might also like these). The book is fun to read and fun to peruse. I've been amazed at how many families I know who have kids with names that fit perfectly in line with her predictions.

Many of you are probably familiar with Laura Wattenburg's program, NameVoyager or her blog. They are worth a look if you haven't checked them out before, as is the newest program using some of her data, Nymbler

Happy name hunting or obsessing to everyone out there who does that sort of thing.
I imagine I'm not the only one :)

Oh man- we've been obsessing about names! I cannot decide. Naming the first and second were so easy. Why is this one so hard!? I bet my names to line up with her categories and styles. I tend to notice similarities in all the names I pick like that. Hehe Now I want to get that book!

Oh no... I just spent 30 minutes playing with that!

Since we're trying to find a good middle name for Juliet, it's right up my alley right now!

I love the Name Voyager. I mess with it alot. Is there an online source to check her "brother and sister names"? I'm not sure if I'm into it enough to buy (and read - my reading list is so long!) a name book, but I'd love to able to look it up.

sorry I wasn't specific enough in the original post as to what Nymbler was, but glad you found it on your own. Hope you enjoy :)
