A birth community for homebirthers etc.

I'm Blair, 28 from Austin, TX. I'm due Nov 22nd and my husband and I aren't finding out the sex until then.

I'm hoping for a natural hospital birth and have an OB that is very supportive of that. I also, unfortunately, have a fibroid the size of a softball sitting like a plug in the bottom of my uterus. I have an appointment with a specialist on Monday to measure for growth/shrinkage and discuss needs/options. There is a 50/50 possibility that I might need a c-section which I am really scared of. Hopefully I will get good news on Monday and can continue to persue natural birth.

Even if I have to have a c-section, I want to go to natural childbirth classes because I feel like I want the information and all the breastfeeding, healthy diet, good pregnancy stuff because it will still help me have a better pregnancy. I'm also interested in how to formulate a birth plan that, while including a c-section, is less traumatic for the baby (less sticking and poking and bright lights, etc.), if that is even possible.

I hope I am able to have a natural birth, but if not I hope you guys don't think I'm crazy for sticking around. I've done a lot of research and "large fibroid blocking birth canal" seems to be one of the few legitimate reasons for c-sections. Any thoughts or ideas are welcome!

Wow! What a difficulty! I really hope it works out for you to have a natural birth. What birth classes are you taking? I took Birthing from Within but I've also heard really great things about the Bradley Classes. Whatever you take, take it outside of the hospital! Classes that are independent of the hospital are more likely to give you better natural birth techniques- I've heard anyway. :)

Thanks for the intro!

I'm hoping to take the Bradley class but I'm a little worried because I think my husband might get a little scared/queasy during a birth. We'll see.

Please please help him to get over that quickly! He needs to be just as prepared as you are because you'll need all the support you can get! The more educated you are going into this experience the better. I wanted a natural birth with my first but I was totally unprepared of the realities of labor and of the hospital so pleeeeease make sure that the both of you are as prepared as you can be! (Learn from my mistakes. ;)

Oh, he's full into it right now. Emotionally he's wicked supportive and would most certainly do well under pressure of hospital people trying to make us do stuff we didn't want or need. The only prolem is he has one of those weak stomachs with blood and goo and other unsavories, as well as being very scent sensitive. Like he will puke if we watch Fear Factor on TV or if you talk about something gross or someone on the bus is wearing perfume. He just can't hold it in, poor guy.

Good luck with the situation you're in. I hope it all works out for you.

I'm in San Marcos, BTW. I'm using a midwife, but I'm going to an OB in Austin on 7/5 for an ultrasound.

He's the specialist that is looking at my fibroid and he did my NT test. I really like him - he is very laid back and smart and really takes time to listen to you. Plus their machines are top-notch and there is a huge plasma tv on the wall you face that also shows what is on the machine so you don't have to strain to see. Bring a vhs and they will record the session.
